The midnight sun in the northern hemisphere starts at the North Pole at the spring equinox in March, when the sun rises. Then some of the solar disk is visible above the horizon around the clock. The sun rises higher in the sky every day, until it “turns” at the summer solstice, and begins to move “down” again. (Of course, it is not the sun that moves, but the globe.).
As the upper edge of the sun disappears below the horizon, it is sunset, and no longer midnight sun. At the North Pole, the sun sets around the autumnal equinox in September, and then it is dark for half a year until the upper edge of the sun again becomes visible above the horizon, and there is sunrise.
This is why the midnight sun and dark time in English are called Polar Day (Midnight Sun) and Polar Night.
